Celebrating Constitution Day with a Themed Care Package

September 17 is significant for a lot of reasons. It’s my sister’s birthday, National Wife Appreciation Day , National Apple Dumpling Day, and, most importantly, National Constitution Day! This year, September 17, 2018 will mark 231 years since the signing of the constitution on September 17, 1787.

Capitol buildingObviously, Constitution Day isn’t a day many people celebrate or sometimes even know about (my students were eager to know if they got the day off!), but it’s worthwhile to reflect on the foundations of our government once a year, especially for our service members who have sworn to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.

And what better way to do that than with a themed package! I personally love themed packages; I once sent my fiancé a completely green themed package because green is my favorite color, and I loved finding new items to include.

I also had a great time coming up with item ideas to match the Bill of Rights from the constitution, and you can too by taking some of my ideas and maybe including some of your own in a Constitution Day themed package for your loved one! Be sure to include a copy of the Bill of Rights for him or her to read on September 17!

Without further ado, the Bill of Rights and package ideas…

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

There’s no better way to represent freedom of speech than including a magazine, newspaper, or book in your Constitution Day care package. Also, check out our article on how much service members love books; you can’t go wrong with celebrating freedom of speech. If you’re religious, you could also consider including some inspirational Scripture verses.

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Second Amendment

I think I had the most fun coming up with ideas for this one. Since your loved one is serving in the military, he or she probably loves the Second Amendment and guns. There are so many fun shirts that you can send pertaining to the Second Amendment: “I Support the Right to Arm Bears” shirt, “The 2nd Amendment Gun Permit” shirt, and “They Can’t Take Away THESE Guns” shirt. Alternatively, you could also send some gummy bears instead (or perhaps in addition to a unique shirt!).

Amendment III

No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

The Third Amendment is much less popular than the preceding two amendments. Because its focus is on troops not being quartered in homes, I thought a picture of your home with you and your family in front of it might be just the thing for your deployed service member. I know one of the pictures that I sent to my fiancé that he enjoyed the most was of his house with an American flag waving on the front porch.

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

You can easily summarize the Fourth Amendment in three words: “search and seizure.” Sometimes service members can have a lot of downtime on deployments, so crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and word searches are much appreciated.

Amendment V

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Movies are always a huge hit on deployment. Send your service member 12 Angry Men, which is a 1957 American courtroom drama focusing on the 12 members of the jury, or Double Jeopardy, a 1999 American adventure crime thriller film invoking the idea of twice being put in jeopardy, as the Fifth Amendment reads.

Amendment VI

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.

speedy trialWe often quote the right of a speedy trial, which comes from the Sixth Amendment, even if we’re not exactly sure which Amendment it comes from. Your service member probably isn’t concerned about a speedy trial, but he or she probably is concerned about speed and staying physically fit. Consider sending a new pair of running shoes or shoe liners for more comfortable running. If your service member is well equipped in this area, maybe a fast-paced game like Dutch Blitz might be a better alternative.

Amendment VII

In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

Trial by jury comes up again in the amendments, but in the Seventh Amendment, there’s an amount: exceeding twenty dollars. Find something your service member will love that exceeds twenty dollars. For my fiancé, it would be beef jerky.

Amendment VIII

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

The Eighth Amendment seeks to avoid cruel and unusual punishments, and you should help your service member avoid the cruel and unusual punishments of nasty smells and odors. Consider sending gum, altoids, deodorant, air freshener, or even shoe powder!

Amendment IX

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

With the downtime of deployments, you want to make sure that your service member has board games and a deck of cards to bring people together, just like the Ninth Amendment talks about.

Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

Favorite Candy in Each State

Finally, the Tenth Amendment is a great excuse to send your loved one something that will remind him or her of your state. If you’re from Ohio and your service member is deployed to a cold country like Norway, consider sending him or her homemade Buckeyes. If you’re not sure what to send, check out this map that shows what candy is most purchased for Halloween in each state and send that (either the state you live in now or the state where your service member is from!).

He or she may be away from America on September 17, but he or she doesn’t have to miss the opportunity to think about the foundations of our government.
